Indore Municipal Corporation in collaboration with Energy Swaraj Foundation has launched the 100-day ‘Indore Climate Mission’, which aims to make Indore India’s first energy-literate city.
This innovative initiative aims to reduce electricity consumption across the city, reduce carbon emissions and inspire other cities in this direction as well.
Indore Mayor Mr. Pushyamitra Bhargava said, – “Indore has consistently demonstrated its commitment towards environmental sustainability, the biggest example of which is that Indore city has its own Climate Action Plan. After winning the title of India’s cleanest city seven times, the Indore Climate Mission initiative reflects the tireless dedication of Indore residents and the Municipal Corporation,”
According to an estimate, a family living in our city produces about 450 grams of visible waste every day, while the invisible waste i.e. carbon related waste is about 27 kg per day.
“Keeping all this in mind, we have decided to do an innovation in collaboration with Energy Swaraj Foundation, so that Indore can also contribute to reducing the heat of the earth. This Climate Mission is going to create a legacy, which demonstrates Indore’s commitment towards environmental protection.” Indore Mayor Mr. Pushyamitra Bhargava said.
Speaking about the main objectives of the mission, Professor Chetan Singh Solanki, Founder, Energy Swaraj Foundation said, “Indore is now going to focus on invisible waste, which is many times more than visible waste. From December 1, 2024 to March 10, 2025, we collectively aim to reduce the electric power consumption of Indore city by 50%,”
“We are also launching a comprehensive program to educate 3-5 lakh Indore residents about the critical connection between energy consumption and carbon emissions, thereby promoting energy literacy across the city. Along with this, we are actively encouraging residents to adopt energy-saving habits, setting a voluntary target of 7-10% reduction in electricity consumption,” Professor Chetan Singh Solanki.
Through this collective effort, we aim to achieve a significant milestone of saving around 20 crore units of electricity within the next one year.”
To effectively engage citizens, Energy Swaraj Foundation is implementing a multi-pronged approach. Daily cycle rallies are being organised to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of cycling and promote sustainable transport.
Professor Solanki further added – “Energy is the fundamental force driving all aspects of human existence. Regrettably, our dependence on carbon-based energy sources has resulted in serious and far-reaching consequences, including global warming and climate change, which have now become a significant threat to the entire planet. Hence we have to move towards clean energy by adopting Energy Swaraj”
The Indore Climate Mission will also include a strong educational component to sensitise students about climate change and its impacts. To engage students, a series of quizzes, competitions and awareness campaigns will be organised, empowering them to become climate champions. Furthermore, the Mission will actively engage the community through various initiatives such as street plays, art competitions and social media campaigns, thereby promoting public participation and collective action.
The initiative will also encourage local businesses to adopt sustainable practices such as reducing energy consumption, implementing effective waste management strategies and promoting eco-friendly products.
