127 Km Dadri-Rewari DFC Goods corridor a sign of marvel engineering

DFC builts Asia's 1st 1 KM wide rail tunnel, laying double rail line that can carry double-stacked containers. This is also the 1st tunnel in Delhi and NCR. 97% work on the 2843 KM Eastern and Western DFCs is completed.

The construction of 127 km Dadri to Rewari section of the 1506 Km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is the sign of marvel engineering.

The engineers of DFCCIL has constructed a rail tunnel of 1 Kilometre in this section which is exceptional in the world.

“It is Asia’s 1st such kind of railways tunnel designed to operate seamlessly double-stack container trains on double tracks. The tunnel is 14.5 metre width. It’s internal height is around 10.5 meter to 12.5 meter. Its construction was very challenging as it was constructed after deep cuts on Arawali hills. said Deputy Chief Project Manager (Rewari) YP Sharma.

“Our engineers faced tough challenges during its construction process. Dadri-Rewari freight corridor tracks has a long 2.76 km viaduct at Sohna which has been constructed with a height of 25 metres from ground level. This avoids heavy earthwork otherwise the DFC track would have divided the Sohna city in two parts. It looks adventurous and also highlights the beauty of civil engineering,” YP Sharma said.

The section has three river bridges, three rail flyovers, 24 major bridges, 79 minor bridges, 16 road overbridges (ROBs), 32 major road underbridges (RUBs), 17 minor RUBs, and 8-foot overbridges (FOBs). Its construction was additional challenge and stands remarkable feat of engineering, he added.

This vital corridor traverses diverse terrains, passing through key states such as Uttar Pradesh, touching Bulandshahar and Gautam Budh Nagar, Haryana with its presence in Faridabad, Palwal, Gurugram, Mewat, and Rewari, and extending into Rajasthan, reaching Alwar, he further said.

Western DFCs almost covers the region of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Eastern DFCs covers Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the official added.

Chitresh Joshi, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Communication, DFCCIL said that the 97% work on the 2843 KM Eastern and Western DFCs has been completed. Nai Dadri to Mumbai Western corridor is total 1506 KM. Meanwhile, work on Soam Nagar to Ludhiana 1486 KM Eastern DFC has been completed and operational. The last leg of the project in Maharashtra —104-km between Vaitarna to JNPT — will be completed by December 2025.

This electrified broad gauge double line became operational with the successful operation of goods trains from ICD Dadri to New Rewari on March 31, 2023. To provide seamless movement of goods train, Railways Ministry has tasked DFCCL to construct dedicated freight corridor accross India.

In order to promote industrial activities and development of new industrial hubs and townships,
The Ministry of Railways is constructing Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) to ease the process of freight loading and it’s un interrupted transportation.

The logistic sector will benefit with development of New Freight terminals, Multimodal Logistic parks and Inland Container Depots creating direct and indirect employment in the project-influence areas. The connectivity of Delhi, Mumbai and Howrah area will be further strengthened with commissioning of DFC project.
