Nagpur Junction is a historic railway station in India that marked its 100th anniversary in 2025. The Ministry of Railways is investing ₹488 crore to upgrade Nagpur station into a world-class facility as part of the Amrit Bharat redevelopment scheme.
Ajni railway station, located 3 km away, is also being redeveloped for ₹359. 82 crore to meet international standards. The focus of both projects is on enhancing passenger comfort and integrating modern facilities.
Pawan Patil, Chief Project Manager, RLDA said that the revamped Nagpur station will feature a modern roof plaza, multimodal transit options, 28 lifts, 31 escalators, and basement parking. “It will also include facilities designed for people with disabilities. Currently, Nagpur station services 283 trains daily and accommodates more than 68,000 passengers,” Patil said.
Adding that he said, “A new, spacious waiting room is being constructed in the eastern part of the station, designed with advanced flooring, attractive walls, improved ventilation, and energy-efficient lighting. There is also a premium lounge being built for long-distance travelers, which will provide comfortable seating, accessible facilities for differently-abled individuals, and clean washrooms,”
A central common waiting room is being created on the concourse level between railway lines 18 and 19. This room will enhance the travel experience for passengers transferring between trains by providing digital display boards, water facilities, and smooth pathways. Overall, the goal of the redevelopment is to improve cleanliness, safety, and comfort in the station.
The Central Railway aims to enhance passenger convenience through these upgrades, modernizing the station’s structure and improving the overall travel experience. Nagpur Railway Station is expected to become one of the nation’s top modern stations, providing new facilities for passengers to enjoy and take pride in.
Nagpur station, originally built in 1867 as Itwari station, plays a significant role in connecting Mumbai and Kolkata. The existing red-stone building, which showcases a blend of Gothic and Mughal architecture, was inaugurated in 1925.
Currently, redevelopment work at Ajni station is also ongoing, focusing on iconic infrastructure, a roof plaza with modern amenities, and accessibility features, while also promoting environmental sustainability. The redevelopment is seen as a way to enhance passenger journeys and support regional development.
